Ruby Red Devons

A traditional native breed in their home county.

Ruby Red Devon cattle are a medium-sized breed, perfectly adapted to life in our hill-side fields. Maturing slowly on a diet consisting solely of herb-rich grass and spring water, they produce beef with maximum flavour.

The breed is also ideally suited to sustainable, regenerative and organic farming systems as they are able to mature naturally on a grass-based diet without inputs of concentrated feed. Though not as large as some more modern breeds, they are naturally vigorous and hardy, which means less need for treatments and medication. Our system is a simple and traditional one whereby the animals graze the fields for most of the year, enriching the soil with their dung as they go. They eat hay or haylage during a housed period in the winter, when it is too wet for them to be on the fields and too cold for the grass to grow well. We make all our own hay and haylage during the summer from our species-rich wildflower meadows, which means we don’t need to buy in any feed that may have been produced somewhere else in an environmentally unsustainable way. By maintaining a reasonable stocking density and managing our pasture well we don’t need to use artificial fertilisers, which have a huge carbon footprint associated with their production and use.

Customers are very welcome to come and see the farm and the animals - we would love our customers to have a knowledge of how their food is produced and feel some connection with the place that it comes from (please call or email to arrange a visit.)
